Study Residence Permit and Working in Italy

Blog article

You have a residence permit for study. Can you work?

Residence permits that allow you to work carry the wording “permesso unico lavoro”.

The residence permit for study is one of the permits that allow you to work.

However, there are precise limits you must respect.

Under Article 14(4) of Presidential Decree (D.P.R.) no. 394/99, a residence permit for study or training allows, while it is valid, employed work for no more than 20 hours a week, which can be combined across fifty-two weeks, within the annual limit of 1,040 hours.

The Labour Inspectorate has clarified that the purpose of this rule is to let foreign students support themselves while studying, while study or training (the reason they entered and are staying in Italy) must clearly remain their main activity.

For this reason, employment contracts with more than 20 hours a week are not allowed, even if the total stays below the annual limit of 1,040 hours.

So remember: if you hold a study permit and want to work more hours than these limits allow, you must apply to convert it into a work permit before it expires.
